Kathy Knecht

Rick Gray

This summer, we ran profiles of state, federal and legislative primary election candidates. They included candidates from each of the recognized parties: Democrat, Republican, Green and Libertarian. We gathered information on each of the candidates from the Arizona Secretary of State’s website, as well as candidates’ own websites.

Because independent candidates do not participate in the primary election, we did not include their profiles. But because they do participate in the general election, now is the time to learn about them.

Kathy Knecht is the only independent candidate running in any of the races Peoria voters will help decide. She is running against Republican Rick Gray for state senator in District 21.

Knecht has served more than a decade as a public school governing board member and community leader. She has been a registered independent for 22 years.

She has a bachelor’s in elementary education as well as a master’s in interdisciplinary studies, both from Arizona State University.

She has served on the Peoria Unified School District Governing Board since 2007. She served as president of the Arizona School Boards Association in 2016, and is a former executive director of Leadership West, a lifetime “Blue Blazer” volunteer for Luke Air Force Base and a member of WESTMARC’s Workforce and Education Committee.

She is a former fourth- and fifth-grade teacher and was a Girl Scout leader for 15 years.

She has served on the following boards: West Valley Arts Council, ASU Community Advisory, Peoria Education Foundation, Benevilla Senior Care, New Life Center, Arizona Town Hall, Arizona Broadway Theatre and Peoria Chamber of Commerce.
