Marco’s Pizza, which opened last February in Goodyear, is doing so well that owners Sandeep and Sukhwinder Purewal decided to open a second location, this time in Peoria.

“Business is very good, very busy, people love the food,” Sandeep said.

The Peoria restaurant at 24786 N. 67th Ave., Suite 110, opened July 30.

The Purewals tout the freshness of the ingredients as to what sets Marco’s apart from other pizza joints.

“We make everything at the store, at the restaurant,” Sukhwinder said.

The dough is made daily, the sauce is made daily, the only reason they have freezers on the premises is for their thin crusts, Sandeep said.

“Because the founder of the company, he’s an Italian guy, so we make the fresh dough every single day in the store, the sauce is fresh, all the prep is done fresh in the store itself, even our cheese,” Sandeep said.

Marco’s was founded in 1978 by Pasquale Giammarco, who came to the U.S. from Sulmona, Italy, when he was 9 years old. It was in Italy where Giammarco learned the “importance of doing things the right way. Obsess over the details. Take pride in what you make,” according to marcos.com.

When the husband-and-wife team were looking to open a restaurant, they sampled pizza from several different restaurants before they found what they were looking for at the Glendale Marco’s. They enjoyed it, but perhaps more importantly, their 3-year-old daughter liked it.

“Our daughter, she’s really picky, she ate the whole slice over there and we really loved it,” Sandeep said.

The Purewals then took a store tour and found out the dough is made fresh in the store.

“That’s the reason,” Sandeep said, explaining Marco’s doesn’t use any preservatives, which can make people feel tired after eating.

Marco’s is headquartered in Toledo, Ohio, and has more than 850 stores in 35 states and four countries. Eight of those stores are in Arizona. On average, a Marco’s opens every three days, with 1,500 locations projected by the year 2020.

The Peoria store is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The store, which offers dine in, carryout and delivery, held a grand opening Aug. 19 and the Purewals are hoping to get their liquor license by Aug. 24, at which time they will offer beer and wine in addition to pizza, subs, salads, sides such as “cheezybread,” chicken dippers and chicken wings, and even “cinnasquares” for dessert.
