Jason Savala

Jason Savala died Aug. 3 in Glendale. He was born March 4, 1978, in Kanab, Utah, to Manuel and Katherine Savala. He had two brothers, Adrian and David, and one sister, Shelley.

Mr. Savala lived with his family in Fredonia, where he attended Fredonia Elementary until 1987. He moved with his family to Glendale in January 1987. Mr. Savala graduated from Independence High School in 1996. He earned his associate degree from Glendale Community College in 2003. He attended Arizona State University West Campus working toward a degree in secondary education.

Mr. Savala would find his passion as a Native American student adviser with Phoenix Union High School District for many years. He also worked as a security officer at Maryvale High School. Through the years of working for Phoenix Union, he was able to influence and mentor many young lives. One of his many qualities was being able to talk to youths through encouraging words, humor and up-front talks. As a result, he has helped many Native American students graduate from high school, who, otherwise, would not have.

Mr. Savala was a great mentor and had a positive impact on many lives. His big personality and humor will greatly be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his parents, Manuel and Katherine Savala; brother, David; sister, Shelley; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Kimball and Berdina Baco; paternal grandparents, David and Gevene Savala; and brother, Adrian Savala.

Services were held on the Kaibab Paiute Indian reservation in Kaibab.
